Phoenix, Arizona
Phoenix is the capital of Arizona and the Maricopa County seat. Situated on a flat desert terrain, Phoenix is located in the south central part of Arizona in the Salt River Valley. It has the Superstition Mountains on the east and is surrounded by the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. In 1867, two settlers settled on the ruins of the Hohokam settlement and one of the two settlers, named it “Phoenix”, predicting that a great city would rise from its own ashes, like the mythical phoenix bird. Phoenix has an area of 475.09 square miles (2000). Phoenix was incorporated in 1881, and became the capital of the state of Arizona in 1912. The climate is warm and humidity is low. Sunshine is approximately 325 days a year, due to which it is known as the “Valley of the Sun”, and as a city “where the old-timers go to retire.” The business environment is friendly, housing is affordable, the cost of living is low, and the population goes on increasing steadily.
The population during the year 2000 was 1,321,045 with a density of 2,781.9 people per square mile. The economy rests on manufacturing and tourism.
